Souvenir de la Malmaison

Syn:

ARS Rating:  8.7

Class:   Bourbon

Date:  1843

Breeder:  Beluze, France

Blooms:  Double.  Very double, gorgeous flesh-pink blooms that fade to pale pinkish white as they age.  Has a tendency to ball in wet weather, but don’t get discouraged, it is still a beautiful rose.

Bloom Frequency:  Repeats.

Color:  Light pink.  Flesh-pink fading to white.

Fragrance:  Very Fragrant – pure rose.

Thorns:  Has prickles.

Approximate Height:  3 x 4’.  An exceptionally well-mannered rose that is excellent for the front of the border.

Description and Care:  The blooms are good as cut flowers and it repeats very reliably.  It is tolerant of most growing conditions and our specimen is never without some blooms.   It will occasionally have a few leaves drop due to blackspot, but it is not afflicted as much as others in its class and seems to be much healthier.

Comments:  Although this rose was developed after Marie Antoinette’s death, it is named after Malmaison, which was her home and supported vast gardens planted with a world-famous rose collection.

This rose is well adapted to warm climates and will survive with organic gardening methods.

I could not resist adding more pictures as this is such a beautiful and rewarding rose to grow.  I cannot recommend this rose enough.  This is far and away my favorite rose and is capable of enduring hardships in a garden and still provide flush after flush of blooms.
