In my search for a method to grow roses that doesn't require the use of a lot of chemicals, I have run across a new product called Messenger This product stimulates the plant (it can be used on all plants, not just roses) to build up their immune system and produce new leaves.  I have mixed feelings about using it.

In my own garden, I have decided to NOT use Messenger, except on those roses which were problematic and/or actually dying of Black Spot before I used Messenger.  'Boule de Neige' is an example of a rose which I've had difficulties maintaining without resorting to either stringent spraying with real chemicals, or my preferred Baking Soda method in combination with Messenger.

The Good The Bad
Causes plants to produce new, healthy canes and leaves. The leaves produced under the influence of Messenger are deformed in the sense that they are MUCH larger than normal and may be rounded.
Leaves are resistant (but not entirely immune) to disease. Plants grown using Messenger are not immune to disease, so gardeners will still need to keep rose beds clean, pick infected leaves, and possibly spray with fungicides or at least baking soda.
Plants grow better and faster.

I am including a picture of what I mean by "deformed" leaves.  Most rose leaves are oval in shape with a "sharply pointed" tip to the leaf.

Messenger-affected leaves tend to be more rounded and may almost lose the sharply pointed tip.  Personally, I find it distinctive and not particularly attractive.  The rose bushes I've used Messenger on have visibly different, bloated leaves.

On the other hand, without Messenger, I have several varieties which I might have had to stop growing because of their tendency toward Black Spot.  If you wish to grown Hybrid Teas without extensive use of chemicals, Messenger is one arrow you may need in your quiver.  You need to be prepared to still spray, however, because even with Messenger, your roses will still get Black Spot under the right conditions (wet/humid with cool nights).
